Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 70 lbs
In the last week my 13 yr old lab has suddenly developed strange bad breath. While he does not have the best teeth, it does not seem like regular bad breath. It seems like it is systemic, like vomit (sorry) or infection. We are reluctant to do a full dental because of his high liver enzymes and other health issues. There doesn't seem to be any issues in his mouth and he is acting normally. He is going to the vet tomorrow. What other things can cause such an odd breath ? What tests should we do?

Hello. You are probably right that the bad breath is not entirely from the teeth or oral cavity. Certainly other health conditions can contribute to Mitch's halitosis including gastrointestinal disease & renal disease. I would recommend an x-ray or his upper GI, including the esophagus to rule out a condition called megaesophagus, & then, of course, a CBC, serum chemistry, urinalysis & thyroid evaluation. This way, if something is found, proper treatment can be initiated immediately. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
