Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Male
Hi, I own a male fancy rat and plan on getting another for his company. The one I have was by himself at the pet store and bought alone. When I went to look for another, the lady told me not to put males together because they will fight. Does this mean I can’t get him a friend?

Rats are all individuals just like humans. Some male rats may not get along with others but most of them do. Try to get a male who seems relaxed and is used to living with other rats. Introductions should be gradual. Begin by having separate cages and putting them in each others cages (without the occupant present) so they can get used to the scent. Then you can introduce them with a screen barrier in between them to prevent any injuries. Proceed slowly with any physical introductions and be prepared for any fighting. Rats may bite you by accident if you try to separate them. If Oreo seems very agitated by the presence of the other rat, it may be best to have him live by himself. Introducing rats on neutral territory can also help eliminate fighting. Never leave them alone on attended until you are sure they are best friends. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
