My cat has diarrhea. Can I give him his HeartGard heartworm preventative?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 8 months old | 10 lbs

My male cat (2 year, 9 months old) is due for his monthly heartworm preventative (HeartGard) tomorrow. He has had diarrhea off and on ( mostly on) the last two weeks. Is it safe to give him the HeartGard while he has diarrhea?

It is safe to give it to him, but I would also have him seen by your vet first if possible. Heartgard rarely will cause an upset stomach but since he has had diarrhea on and off for 2 weeks I am more worried that he is becoming dehydrated. Your vet will be able to do a fecal and see if he has any parasites. Be sure they rule out giardia as well. They will be able to get him started on the proper meds to help him feel better. I hope this helps!
