My cat licks bald spots despite flea treatment. Fleas or anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 11 months old

So my cat is on flea treatment, and i say this as last time he had fleas about 1.5 months ago he licked long swatces of fur off. He hated being touched. Now he has licked a quarter sized spot bald. He been nervous but not licking and is extra ticklish but loves petting still. I serched but see nothing but hes also 90% blackish brown. Is it stress as je has anxiety or could it be fleas dispite being on a preventative?

That depends on what flea prevention you are using. Older products, that are found more often over the counter, are more likely to not be as effective as newer products. Please feel free to post again with the name of the product you are using. I recommend Revolution or Cheristan for cats. The best way to know if this is fleas or not would be to change your product for two months and see if the problem goes away. You can also purchase a flea comb and comb Sake’ daily focusing on the area around his lower back, tail and the back of his hind legs. look for fleas or small, black pepper flake material (that’s flea feces). Environmental allergy, food allergy, hyperthyroidism or anxiety can also cause similar lesions. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
