My cat had tongue removed. How can she eat normally without mess?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 14 years and 10 months old | 9 lbs

My cat had Squemus Cell Carcinoma on her tongue which we had the tougue removed last June. We currently feed her through a tube but would like her to eat normal. We roll regular cat food into small balls and give her dry food, but the saliva becomes a mess. Can you recommend any ideas?

Unfortunately I don't know that theres going to be a safe, non messy way to feed her other than her tube. Without her tongue to help her pick up the food and channel the saliva, there just is not a way for her to do it without making a mess. You could try "containing" the mess by putting her in a bathroom or laundry room for feeding time, where the surfaces are easy to clean up. I'm sorry, there really just isn't another option, unfortunately. Thank you for taking such great care of her! She's lucky to have such a dedicated owner.

I would be concerned about any oral food if Sarah had much of her tongue removed. It sounds to me like you should continue tube feedings. If your vet recommended transitioning to food offered by mouth then you should check in with them to see what is recommended.
