Why is my finicky dog losing weight after finding ticks on him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 94 lbs

My GSD 3 y.o goes to the vet regularly and gets his vaccs every year. He’s always been a finicky eater but it’s seems like this past month he’s been extra finicky and possibly losing weight. I can only tell cause I felt his spine against me recently. We found 2 ticks on him and I medicate with tick/flea meds once in a while. We went to the lake last weekend so I figured ticks came from there. So if money is tight, what can I do, find out myself, and incorporate into diet to gain? All advice plzz

Unfortunately it sounds to me like Rogue has a medical condition that may be causing his decrease in appetite - he could have a tick borne disease, liver or kidney disease or gastrointestinal problem. I really think it would be best to try to see a vet: you can look into Care Credit as a potential payment option. You could try offering a higher calorie food or mixing canned food in with the dry to tempt him to eat, but if he continues to lose weight you should definitely see a vet.
