Why does my dachshund have recurring skin bumps? What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 5 months old | 18 lbs

I have a mini dachshund that has raised bumps under his skin. They popped up yesterday afternoon and he had a fever. Before bed I gave him a bath and a Benadryl. When we woke up today, he didn’t have a fever and the bumps looked better. Now they have come back, more of them but without a fever today. I don’t have what these are or where they came from. He is an inside dog and allergic to grass. It’s been raining so much in our area. He hasn’t;t been outside and using the bathroom on a potty pad.

Hello, thank you for your question about Dallas. The bumps in the photos that you've provided look live hives which are usually indicative of an allergic reaction. Often times depending on the severity of the reaction dogs require more than one dose of Benadryl or other more aggressive medications. I would administer additional Benadryl to Dallas now. If this dose does not improve the hives or he develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or rapid breathing I would recommend having Dallas seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Hope this helps, good luck!
