Why is my newborn guinea pig suddenly unable to walk or stand?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male

My guinea pig was born this week and the first few days he was completely fine and healthy and out of nowhere he’s just now crooked, he can barely walk and can’t stand up. I was wondering if this is because he’s still not completely developed or if this means he’s going to die

Thanks for reaching out about Gizmo. No sure if this can be answered over the internet but think Gizmo needs to see a veterinarian. Since its Saturday evening, this probably means seeing someone on an emergency basis as not sure if can last until Monday. A bacterial infection that has enter the brain (sepsis, meningitis) as well as metabolic diseases need be considered also. The sow should also be examined to rule out mastitis (infected mammary gland). Good luck.
