My dog faints on heart meds. Is his Vetmedin dosage too high?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 14 years and 2 months old | 8 lbs

My dog is currently on Vetmedin 1.25mg every 12 hours and Enalapril 1.25mg every 12 hours. He has been on these medications for about 1 and half months and has recently had a few fainting spells. He has an enlarged heart and has a heart murmur. His vet recommended us giving him a half dosage of Vetmedin in between the 12 hours would you recommend this? What are signs that he is getting too much?

Some dogs do better with more frequent administration of Vetmedin and it can be given three times a day. It’s difficult for me to know if I personally would recommend this since I don’t know all of the particulars of Max’s case. If he’s had fainting episodes an arrhythmia might be something else to look for. You might also want to look into a referral to a cardiologist for an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound).
