Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 16 years old | 22 lbs
Hi, I have 3 dogs, 2 of them keep coughing on and off, they will cough and sometimes they'll gag like throwing something up but nothing comes up. It happens at least 3, 4 times a day for about 5 or more minutes. It started about 6 months ago. Sometime a week or 2 goes by and no coughing but then it comes back. I'm thinking kennel cough but they never go anywhere just stay home with me. Can they get kennel cough at home being they never go anywhere?

Pets can get kennel cough even though they never leave the house. This however would be an unusual presentation for kennel cough because it has lasted for so long. Kennel cough is caused by infectious agents and so just like with any infection, they get sick and then they get better. Something more chronic such as this is more likely related to something like allergies, bronchitis, lung worms or poor air quality. Since it has been going on for so long, I recommend to have the coughing dogs checked out. The doctor may recommend a radiograph to evaluate the lungs and look for any inflammatory processes. I hope this is helpful and if you have any further questions, please feel free to post them.
