Dog's masses with 'fingers' keep recurring. Are they cancerous?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 12 years and 8 months old | 7 lbs

I took my 12 year old Chihuahua to the vet to have some masses surgically removed, and the vet told me they would come back because they had things like fingers....what are these called? Would they be considered cancerous?

It’s difficult to know - this describes many types of both benign and malignant skin masses. It is common for a sarcoma to be described as having ‘fingers’ that extend into normal tissue, but even cysts or other benign skin masses can come back if there is tissue left behind. I’d ask your vet for more information.
