My dog Shadow is trying to mate with a female who is in heat at the moment. He has lost his appetite and wouldn't eat. All he does is try to mate with the female. Is this normal?

Yes, this is absolutely normal for an entire male. I would try to keep them separate, but if they are in the same building they will sense each other. The advice would change according to wether you would like to breed from the female dog and you are happy about having puppies or not. Nevertheless I hope we have reassured you and answered your question. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach !
