My dog has a growing, liquid lump. Can I drain it myself or see a vet?

Hi! I have a 13 year old dog who has a growth on his shoulder. We’ve had it checked once and it was found to be non-cancerous, but our vet told us to keep an eye on it. It has since grown quite a lot, and now has a smaller growth which is softer and seems to be filled with liquid. We don’t know what to do; we’re university students so finances aren’t the best. Is this growth something we could try and drain ourselves from home or is it desperate that we take him to the vet? Thanks!

Hello, thank you for your question about Toby. I would NOT recommend draining this lesion at home! It is possible that the recent increase in size and the fluid area could be a secondary cyst. If Toby is otherwise acting normally and is not bothered by the area I think that it is ok to continue to monitor the area. If Toby is chewing/scratching at the area or seems uncomfortable I would recommend having him seen by your veterinarian. It is also possible that this area could have become infected and could require a course of antibiotics. Hope this helps, good luck!
