My hamster is losing weight and lethargic. Is he sick or old?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 9 months old

Hello, my hamster is acting weird. He has become antisocial, less active and happy (I think). He weighted around 172g and now he weights 142g; in 6 month gap. Should I be worried? Is it because he is getting old? I give him yolk, salads and little pieces of apple in his main dish. I also give him yoghurt drops as a treat and dry food; treats that have beneficial immunity boost cream inside of it. He is active after 1am and only runs on his wheel for few hours, which he hasn't done that before.

Thanks for reaching out about Vasia. It would be a mild concern that she has lost 20% of his body weight. Age is not a disease, and some organ system is probably responsible for the weight loss. Renal disease is fairly common in aging hamsters. Try and monitor water consumption and urination. Good luck.
