Why does my dog lick furniture, act reactive, and seek attention?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Scottish Terrier | Female | spayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 18 lbs

Why does my 3yr old Scottie frequently lick the carpet, couch, etc when we are relaxing watching TV? MY 5yr old doesn't do that. She also is much more reactive on walks and wants attention from people we stop to greet.

All dogs are individuals and have different personalities just like people. Pets who lick objects will do so out of boredom, anxiety or even to show a possessive behavior. You may want to pick up a few books on dog training and dog behavior so that you can learn to recognize the body language and determine which of the causes is making her react this way. The training books can also give you different techniques to deal with Qwen’s dog reactivity. I like the trainer Victoria Stilwell. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
