Vet diagnosed hot spot, but my dog vomited. Could it be Alabama Rot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 6 years and 1 month old | 70 lbs

Hi, last Thursday my dog was vomiting quite a lot. She also had an area of irritated skin at the top of her back leg. We saw a vet on Monday (a follow up for something else) and he said it was a hot spot, shaved and cleaned it with surgical scrub and gave us some to take home. The vomiting had stopped so I didn’t mention it as it had only been 24hours. I’ve read that these are symptoms of Alabama rot and I’m worried that the vet didn’t consider it as I hadnt mentioned the vomiting. 5yoChoc lab.

Hello. This does not sound like Alabama Rot ( Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy ) as most dogs will have signs of renal disease called azotemia. While acute vomiting is a sign of this, it would not just stop after 24 hours. Thrombocytopenia is often seen on bloodwork & the skin lesions can be quite impressive. If Poppy is eating, drinking & urinating normally, & the skin irritation is resolving, then the chances of this being CRGV is quite unlikely. Any concerns, please return to your vet for follow up blood work which will identify if there are any ongoing renal changes that are indicative of this disease.
