How important is the kennel cough vaccine if many things cause it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I recently posted about my 2 Dachshund siblings having their kennel cough, DHP, lepto 2 vaccinations. I reply suggested a gap between vaccines. Can I also ask how important kennel cough vaccine is that affective as I have read that there are a lot of agents that can cause kennel cough?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dogs. Kennel cough is a generic term for an upper respiratory tract infection. While Bordetella is a common component of the infection, you are correct in that there are other causes. I do recommend the vaccine though as I seen respiratory infections very frequently. The vaccine can either prevent the disease or will lessen the effects of the infection. I hope this information helps!
