Why do vets suggest 3 meals for young puppies, but 2 seems fine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 2 months old | 59 lbs

Why the vets recommend that we should divide our dog’s meals for 3 meals if under 4 months 2 meals from 6 months and so on. However i saw many 4 months puppies eat 2 times a day and they are fine and therir stomach can take the amount in 2 meals only not 3

Many vets recommend to feed puppies more frequently to avoid issues with low blood sugar. Some puppies are not able to regulate their blood sugar very well until they are four months old. After four months old almost all dogs can regulate their blood sugar and so feeding twice a day is fine. Many dogs eat twice a day even as puppies and do fine. It’s all individual. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions!
