My dog gained weight & has poor coat after Prednisone. Hypothyroidism?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 10 months old | 73 lbs

Hi. My dog has been on a Predsinone treatment for 3 months for his IBD lymphoplasmacytary. The reduction of Pred. has been slow and gradual. She has not taken corticoids for 1 month but I have noticed that she has gained weight without eating more and her coat is of poor quality, even with areas with less hair, and some dandruff. I don't know if Pred. could induce a dog to have hypothyroidism. Thank you

I recommend to have Pepe see his veterinarian again. Pred is not expected to induce hypothyroidism but it can cause Cushings Disease. This disease has similiar symptoms. It is also possible that Pepe has developed hypothyroidism on his own. Best to get him checked out. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
