Why did my old guinea pigs die with bleeding gums after flea spray?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi. This is about an old pet that has already passed away but I am still not sure what happened to them. I had two guinea pigs left out of nine and the two left had fleas (one was 6 year and one was 5) so I got flea and tick spray. The next day the 6 year old one died and he was bleeding at the gums. The next day the other one died with the same thing! Was this just a coincidence?? I know they were both at very old and going to pass soon. But it was odd that it happened like that. Do you know?

Hello. I am so sorry for your loss. If the Flea & Tick spray was labeled for guinea pigs, & you used the proper dosage, then this was probably a sad coincidence, especially if nothing else had changed or was administered. Sometimes we just cannot explain it when unusual things happen, that is just the way life is. It is truly an odd situation, but they were older & it is possible it was just their time. I am sorry for your loss. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
