Why is my indoor cat's ear red, warm, and rashy? Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 8 months old | 9 lbs

Hello, I noticed a little redness on my cat's left ear (very hard to spot, noticed it when he scratched it and the light was behind). He is a domestic cat, doesn't go outside, so I assume this is not caused by a flea or something of the sorts. The ear is warm to the touch. I've attached two photos (left and right ear). The right ear has no issues, the left ear is the one with the rash-like. Is this something I should be concerned for?

Skin lesions can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. Indoor cats can still pick up fungal or parasitic infections, so if the lesion does not resolve or if it gets worse, I recommend making an appointment to have Dunki seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the lesion you’ve noticed and to make sure it is treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment.
