What causes my dog's itchy peeling spots and red, irritated ears?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Poo | Male | neutered | 6 years and 5 months old | 15 lbs

my dog bodie has these large peeling spots on his stomach. he is very itchy and keeps biting at it. we were told by his groomers that he has dry skin and to bathe him with oatmeal shampoo so we naturally thought it was just his dry skin making him itchy. but after bathing him yesterday i noticed these large spots and his ears are red and irritated as well and he keeps itching them. we have two dogs in the house and the other seems to be fine, no spots on her. just wondering what it could be

Ouch! Those areas do look pretty red and irritated. I would have Bodie checked out by your vet to check for issues such as yeast, fungal or bacterial infections that could be causing irritation. Food allergies, environmental allergies, allergies to shampoo, or excessive licking can also sometimes cause irritation as well. In the meantime, placing a T-shirt or Elizabethan (cone) collar on Bodie is best to keep him from licking or scratching the area to help reduce irritation and prevent the spread of additional bacteria, however since his entire body is affected, seeking veterinary care is best.
