My bunny's eye whites are turning blue. What could be the cause?

Hi there, There is a slight glare in the photo so it's hard to tell what the middle part of the eye looks like, but it is normal for schlera to be visible. I would recommend comparing to the other eye to tell if it's bulging. If you bunny begins to have any discharge from that eye, she should be seen by a veterinarian. That could be due either to an infection or potentially an hemorrhage on one of the ear small vessels. Usually this latter condition is caused by scratching or shaking anyway and an infection/inflammation is usually present anyway. A check up would be needed to determine the underlying cause and give appropriate treatment.

I am so sorry to hear that Blanco isn't feeling well! With what you are describing, I would be concerned about a few things with Blanco's eye. When the third eyelid is protruding and if the eye seems to be pushing out of the skull more than on the other side, this can mean that either the eye itself is big (and therefore sticking out more from the skull) or that there is something pushing the eye out (such as a mass behind the eye). Rabbits can get diseases within the eye that make them bigger than normal. They also can get abscesses (mostly related to their teeth), cancers, and other diseases that can grow behind the eye. There is also a cancer in their chest that they can develop, called thymoma, that also can result in the eyes being pushed further out than normal, but that usually affects both eyes, and not just one. I would recommend getting Blanco seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. The reason for this is that I don't want his eye to dry out, as sometimes it can be hard

Hello there! Rabbit urine can be a rainbow of colors and still be normal. Rabbits excrete a large amount of minerals in their urine, like calcium, which can be whitish in color. Their urine also changes color based on what they eat - for example, a rabbit that eats a lot of carrot or sweet potato in a day will have dark orange colored urine. Milky white urine is probably nothing to worry about, but if Blacky is exhibiting any other symptoms (like anorexia or diarrhea), or you see any mucous-like substances or red streaking (potentially blood) in the urine, be sure to visit your vet right away. Your bunny may have an eye infection, allergic conjunctivitis, or a corneal ulcer (a scratch on the surface of the eye). There does not appear to be any discharge present to that is a good thing. I would recommend taking your bunny to the vet to be checked out. This way the exact cause of the eye irritation can be determined and treated appropriately. I hope this helps. Hi there! It's hard to tell from this photo but it looks like this is a pretty normal-looking eye--do you have a picture of the infected eye? Has a veterinarian seen your bun to figure out what medication is appropriate to put in the eye you think is infected?

Sometimes this is due to calcium excess in the diet, meaning too many green vegetables. A veterinary visit is recommended to help assess the condition. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Fluffy and including a photo. Ocular secretions can become thicker and not drain through the lacrimal duct, when certain conditions arise. This could be an infection, dental disease (affecting drainage), stress and other problems. Continue to wipe the eye area with a moistened clear wash cloth. If worsens, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Remember, having your rabbit spayed is very important as rabbits have a high incidence of uterine neoplasia. Good luck.

It is hard for me to appreciate much redness from these photos however it can be very difficult to see subtle changes around the eye in a photo. If your rabbit it squinting his eyes or has any excessive discharge from the eyes or you see a cloudy spot/circle on the surface of his eye, these are all signs he should be seen by the vet as he could have an eye infection or an eye wound. If they just look a little red to you, you can try using a sterile eye wash to rinse the eyes in case they are irritated from some debris and if he is on a bedding of shavings which can be irritating to some pets switch his bedding to a paper-type bedding such as Carefresh.
