Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Setter | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 15 days old | 5 lbs

Tazzy has brown stuff (likely wax) in her right ear, seems to be scratching behind her ear often, also feeling behind both ears and, right seems like it could be inflamed. What are symptoms of ear infections in dogs, and how can they be treated?

Signs of an ear infection are often a discharge in the ear, redness to the ear, sensitivity to the ear, scratching, head shaking or an odor. There are three types of ear infections and treatment is different for each one. They need to be treated by a veterinarian who can provide appropriate medication. Ear infections can be painful so I recommend to have Tazzy seen within the next day for so by the veterinarian. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

It's probably an ear infection, often it cannot be seen from the outside. Ear infections are very common in dogs, it is usually caused by either yeast or bacterial disease. the treatment is usually simple and straightforward, you will have to take him to the vet and get the ears checked, then a prescription ear drops will be prescribed according to the infectious agent.
