Can I change my dog's daily Metacam dosing time for pain relief?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 6 months old | 14 lbs

My dog was seen by the vet last night for an emergency visit due to a spinal cord injury. He was prescribed Metacam and Gabbapentin. I dosed him as soon as we got home, around 12 am. The vets instructions were to give the Metacam 1x per day. Do I have to dose at the same time every day? I'd rather not wait until midnight. Can I dose him now, around 8? Can I dose him in the AM tomorrow so he gets the most pain relief during the day? Or should I skip tonight all together in order to give it in AM?

I'm sorry to hear that Axel is having this problem! It won't hurt anything if you want to give the Metacam a few hours early (such as at 8 pm instead of midnight), but I would not give another dose in the morning so close together. If you would rather dose him in the morning, then it would be best to skip tonight's dose altogether, then start once daily dosing tomorrow morning instead.
