My cockatiel is sick and underweight. Why isn't she getting better?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Female | unspayed | 0.6 lbs

My Cockatiel has been sick now for about a month. I took her to a vet and they pointed out how skinny she was on her Chest bone. She only weighed 55g through force feeding her Egg and Biscuit Bird mix twice daily and keeping her warm with a light she has come up ro 60g over the past 3 weeks. She still is not well and Im unsure if she will get better?

Thanks for reaching out about Nibbles. A bird this small/light weight probably needs diagnostic testing to determine the problem. You should start with a CBC (complete blood count) to look for signs of infection, a serum biochemistry to check kidney/liver function, and possibly radiographs. You need to feed more than twice daily and improve the caloric intake, but food is not fixing the problem. Continue to heat support so Nibbles doesn't get cold and have to shiver to generate heat, thereby using up calories. Good luck.
