Rough skin on my cockatiel's head: Is it her nails or something else?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male | 6 months and 2 days old

My cockatiel has rough skin on her head and i saw online its because her nails are long and when she scratches she scratches it too hard and it can start to bleed. Mine's nails are little bit longer but not much longer so i dont know is it because of her nails ir something else?

Thanks for reaching out about Keke. Rough skin on the body can be due to poor grooming habits, dietary deficiencies, infections or just plain molting. Do you offer Keke an opportunity to bath (i.e. shower, mist, etc)? A seed diet is deficient in vitamin A which can lead to some dermal problems. Trim the nails as needed, but this is probably not the primary problem. If the problem persists, a veterinary visit might be needed. Good luck.
