My dog has a neck lump, acting off, breathing hard. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | 1 year old

I have a border collie who was her happy excitable self this morning and earlier this afternoon I went out and she was really quiet and placid. I noticed a lump on her lower jaw/neck/throat. She hasn’t eaten her dry dog biscuits but did eat cooked rice, she has also drank water since. Her whole behaviour has changed. Her saliva appears thicker and her breathing appears slightly more effortful and audible. I want to know how to help and what it could be from because it has developed today thanks!

It's a little difficult to tell what exactly is swollen in your picture, but it's possible that Frankie has an enlarged salivary gland or lymph node, or something like an abscess. All of these things can occur suddenly. I would recommend having your vet take a look - they might be able to get a better idea from being able to see and feel the swelling in person. They might recommend taking a sample using a small needle (fine needle aspirate) if it seems like a lymph node or salivary gland is swollen.
