Why does my young dog have hip pain when getting up from sitting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | neutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 20 lbs

My Shiba started recently having troubles getting up from the sitting position. It’s like his hips almost seem cramped up and he has to walk it off.. he’s only two and this started about a month ago but I was thinking it was just a tear in a ligament or pulled muscle but it’s sti going on. What could it be?

Poor Zuko! It could be he has a problem with his hips, spine, or ligaments in his back legs causing him difficulty getting up . He's showing you he's in pain with this behavior, and this needs to be checked out by a vet. I'd take him into a vet on Monday. The vet can prescribe pain medication as needed. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps!
