How to stop my cat from bothering my canaries? Is a new cage better?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 29 days old | 8 lbs

I just bought my son 2 canarys because he was crying to have a bird but our cat is so fascinated with them, she keeps trying to grab them through the cage openings her paw fits through there! I was thinking of buying them a different cage, would that help and what would make my cat forget about them because she has been standing by the cage the past 3 hours

It won't make your cat forget about them, thats for sure. However, a different cage may be more protective for the birds. Ideally, you might consider keeping the birds cage in a room that is closed off to the cat. This will keep the cat away from them entirely. The constant stalking that the cat may be doing to the birds could stress them out significantly and also may frustrate your cat. Sorry I don't have an easy solution for you here. Best of luck!
