My dog's dental surgery: Stop pain meds? Is his pooping normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

My 9 year old Jack Russell Terrier/Rat terrier mix has a dental procedure on Tuesday at 8 am. He has been taking Rimadyl and Tramadol since Thursday night and last time he took medicine was around 1 pm today (only Tramadol). They was prescribed for his teeth pain and mouth swelling. Since the anesthetic dental procedure is in 3 days should I stop giving him the medicine? Also, he’s only pooped a small poop once since yesterday? What should I do?

What a sweet face! You do not need to stop giving either of the medications. Both are safe for him to receive right up to the day of surgery. Hold off on giving the them the morning of surgery unless your vet instructed otherwise. Its ok for him to only have had one small bowel movement in the past 24 hours. As long as he isn't straining to poop, he's eating some and he seems comfortable, you're good! Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.
