How do I know if my cockatiel's nails need trimming and when to do it?

Thanks for reaching out about Keke and including a photo. No all birds nails need to be trimmed, depends on if they move around a lot to wear them down. By the pictures, the nails appear a little long. It the base of the toe is on a flat surface and the nail is long enough to raise the toe or rotate to the side, it should be trimmed. Good luck.

    Thanks for your question about Phoenix. To know if it is time to trim her nails, you can look at how long they are in comparison to the toes. The ends of the nails should be in line with the toes, but not longer. When they are on a perch, sometimes the nails will raise up and be taller than the toes, which is also an indicator of them being too long. I know this is likely a bit confusing, so if you would like to post photos, we can tell you if they are long or not as well.
