My dog on canned food won't drink water. Normal for bladder issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | 10 years and 6 months old | 9.5 lbs

My dog has been switched to Royal Canin GI low fat canned with SO as she has had stones. She’s only on the low fat bc she tends to have high tryglicerides as well. She actually perfect weight/slightly under. Overall she’s healthy and active etc. Her only issue is, ever since switching to canned, she doesn’t drink water. At all. Which she needs to help with her bladder issues. I’ve tried a water pump and she still doesn’t use it. Is this normal for her to not want water?

Canned food has a high water content, so it can be normal for dogs to stop drinking much water when they are eating canned food. You might want to talk to your vet about testing Sadie's urine specific gravity and urine pH after she's been on the food for a few weeks to make sure they are in the ideal range for a dog with bladder stones. If so you probably don't have to worry about encouraging her to drink more water.
