My dog is coughing, lethargic, honking, and throwing up mucus. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, my dog has been coughing since last night and into today. It started off as just hacking but has progressively gotten worse and sounds more like honking now. She is acting very lethargic and whenever she moves she starts another coughing fit. When she coughs she will also sometimes cough up flem, a grey mucus and a clear water like mucus.

I'm concerned about your dog, especially since her symptoms are getting worse. She could have a respiratory infection, or it could be something more serious such as heart disease. I think she needs to see a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

Poor girl. So sorry for the late response in getting to your message. I hope that your pet is still stable. Considering this is day 5 since the start of her symptoms I would recommend taking her in right away for care, even if that means an ER visit. She could have a simple upper respiratory infection going on, or it could be something more serious such as a lower airway infection (pneumonia) or even herat disease can cause symptoms of coughing. I hope that your pet is still ok and is on her way to recovering. Best wishes and take care.
