My dog gets itchy bumps and hives from seasonal allergies. What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 6 years and 8 months old | 16 lbs

My dog has seen the vet multiple times for his seasonal allergies. He gets itchy, red skin, dry skin,he sneezes, and gets bumps similar to hives. The bumps are small, but if you touch it or rub over it,its gets inflamed. The bumps usllay come on his snout. They are fiiled with a clear fluid. He randomly breaks out.My vet said to put witch hazel on him when he breaks out and I have been doing that along with giving him a allergie supplement and Benadryl. Why does he get bumps? And how can I him to not?

If Oscar is having allergy issues I would consider discussing Apoquel with your veterinarian. This is an allergy medication that works very well for dogs. The spots you are referring to may either be hives or a secondary skin infection. WIthout seeing them it is hard to say exactly what they are. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Poor Oscar! These pups generally respond well to diets high in fatty acids and antioxidants. Royal Canin makes a diet called skin support that most pets do very well on. Antihistamines and anti-itch medications also help. Lastly, there are immunotherapies available that have about an 80% positive response rate. Speak with you veterinarian about the best approach for Oscar. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
