My dog had surgery. Accidentally gave too much Vetprofen. Is he safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 years and 9 months old | 31 lbs

My dog had surgery today on his leg. He weighs 31 lbs and I just accidentally gave him a whole 75 mg Vetprofen. I didn't realize that I was only supposed to give him half. I was informed he was give a pain shot, but it might be best to go ahead and give him the pain medication tonight. Will he be ok with that dose?

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Percy. The recommended dose is 2mg/lb once daily or 1mg/lb twice daily. You gave him a little over the daily recommended dose for once per day. He should be fine with this, do not give him anymore tonight, and tomorrow wait until 24 hours after you gave him the full pill and then start half twice daily. I hope this helps.
