My rescued dog has dry skin spots. How can I help his coat grow back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 40 lbs

We rescued a dog. Overall in good health. Had some heart worms. He has these spots on his skin we are worried about. They dont seem to bother him. They are dry and scab-like. Vet didnt say anything about them. Any idea what is causing them? How can we help him grow his coat back?

Congratulations on brining Arrow into your family. I assume you guys are treating/have treated the heartworms. These are serious parasites and are fatal if not treated. Those lesions could be a few things (mites, bacteria infection) etc but hey also look a lot like scar tissue from the photos. If it is scar tissue, the hair may never regrow. The best thing that you can do for Arrow is to feed him a diet that is good for the skin. I recommend a food called Royal Canin. Pets that are on this diet typically have very good hair and skin quality. An additional omega fatty acid supplement for dogs can also help. If this lesion start to look worse, have him seen by his veterinarian. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions!
