My puppy has red diarrhea after eating rabbit food. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | BullBoxer | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 16 days old | 6 lbs

My puppy has had diarrhea all day. It’s a reddish-orange color with some clear fluid. She ate a tiny amount of rabbit food when I turned my back for a minute, so I think this may have irritated her stomach. Aside from that, I haven’t changed her puppy food and she’s been dealing with some separation anxiety when I go to work. She’s still her usual energetic self and does not seem sick aside from her poop. Should I be worried?

I'd be concerned that the color of Ripley's diarrhea is due to blood, but given she ate some rabbit food, this could be irritating her GI tract. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, you continue to see blood in her feces, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
