Why did my cat eat poop outside the litter box? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 11 days old | 4 lbs

We haven't fed the cats dry food for a bit because of a miscommunication about who was to feed them what and when, they've had wet food for three days. But one of them pooped outside the box, it was about the same color as their dry food, and Eevee started eating it. What just happened, and what do I do? She was just at the vet for a previous poop issue (they cleared her stool sample already).

You may just monitor at this point. Eevee may end up with an upset stomach from eating feces and then again, she could be fine. You could feed her a diet of boiled white meat chicken and plain boiled white rice for the next 24 hrs if she will eat it (cats can be picky). As long as the cats are worm free, you don’t have to worry about anything being transmitted. Figure out who is pooping outside the box as this can be either behavioral or medical. Monitor for reoccurrence. Also get the cats on a good food routine as switching things up can lead to an upset stomach. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
