My dog ate ibuprofen after choking. Is it toxic? Why is she sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bullmastiff | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 20 days old | 10 lbs

I gave my dog a squirt of infants ibuprofen, is this okay she had choked on a piece of dog food and we got to her stop by trying to pull it out and we could not get it, then we dumped water down her throat and she was no longer choking. But, now she breathes funny and until last night would not eat or drink on her own.

Poor Darby! I would not give her any more ibuprofen as this is toxic to dogs. I would have your vet take a look at her as I am worried about her not eating/drinking and breathing funny especially since she is so young and small. It is possible she could have aspiration pneumonia which if left untreated could be very serious. Your vet will be able to listen to her heart and lungs, and even do blood work and x-rays if needed. Your vet will be able to get her on the proper meds to help her feel better. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon!
