My budgie coughs, sneezes, and has red nostrils. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | 3 months and 12 days old

I bought this new budgie and from the first time we have gotten him i noticed he would cough repeatedly (maybe sneezing) he does this twice a day for 1 to 2 minutes. Sometimes things come out like one small seed... he's generally happy and doesn't seem sick but this behaviour worries me. He plays, runs around eat and drink normally. Also his nostrills are a bit red compared to the others. Is this normal?

Thanks for reaching out about Cloud and including photos. Sneezing can be a normal behavior to clear the nostrils, especially in a dusty environment. Respiratory discharge or secretions, difficulty breathing, quiet and lethargic are all indications of possible illness and should be check out by a veterinarian. Good luck.
