How to help my underweight dog gain weight after stomach issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rat Terrier | Male | neutered | 7 years and 7 months old | 7 lbs

What supplements to vets recommend to help an underweight dog gain weight? My dog is pretty underweight, partially because he’s been stressed and puking his meals lately. So, we just switched him to a mellow formula that uses chicken and rice which he’s holding down fine, but he’s so skinny! The food itself is advertised for dogs who are overweight and need a better diet, so I’m concerned about that itself, but it’s the food he holds down right now. Are there supplements I can buy to help?

Hello. At this point in time, you are probably better just using this weight management diet until you are pretty sure most of Ziggy's digestive issues are settled. Supplements will not help him to gain weight, holding food down will. That is the most important thing right now. If he continues to do well, you can add small amounts of a diet made for puppies to increase the caloric density of his meals. Over time, add more of the puppy food until you are pretty sure his digestive difficulties are over. Then switch to a regular maintenance food. Once there, he should do fine. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
