My cockatiel has rough skin. Should I trim her nails? Is she male?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male | 5 months and 28 days old

I saw online if my cockatiel has rough skin its because her nails are long. My cockatiel has rough skin a bit so i dont know if i should trim her nails. Everyone who kept cockatiels in my town told me they never did it. And also is it possible for her to turn into a female? Females dont have much yellow on head and have dull cheeks and have black and yellow stripes on tail. Mine's face is 30% yellow and she has bright cheeks and sings, but has yellow and black stripes on her tail. Is she a male?

Rough skin on the legs usually indicates dry skin or even possible issues such as mites (parasites) or vitamin deficiencies. Treating your bird for mites and making sure she's on a balanced diet should help. Nail length has no bearing on the condition of the legs, but if the nails are too long, trimming them can help with perching. Without seeing a photo of your bird, it would be hard to say if they are male or female. Birds do not change sex randomly, and it could be that your bird is now old enough to show mature colors, or has a mutation that may make it harder to sex.
