Puppy's first heat: she's in pain and uncomfortable. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bully | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 9 days old | 45 lbs

My 7 and a half month old female puppy is currently in heat for the first time and she has been acting as though she is in pain and doesn't seem to be comfortable laying down and is not her normal playful self. Is it possible she is just not feeling good because of her being in heat? What can I do to make her more comfortable?

It is possible but since Piper can’t talk, and I can’t preform a physical exam, I can’t say for sure. Back pain, gut pain or a bladder infection are all possible. I recommend to be safe and have her seen by her veterinarian. If she checks out normally, a heating pad applied to her lower abdomen may help-make sure it’s not too hot though, pets can get burned! The doctor can also prescribe pain medication safe for dogs. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
