My dog licks her paw. Should I use a cone, or will it cause stress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 4 years and 8 months old | 8.4 lbs

My dog has some type of inflammation on her front paw. We took her to the vet and he said it's some sort of allergy and just gave us some cream and told us to keep the area sanitized. Is it better for us to put the anti-bite dog collar so she won't be able to lick it? My parents keep letting her lose so she can be free. They think it will give Pola too much stress. I think we should put it on so she can heal completely. Which way is better? How much stress do dogs get from putting on the collar?

The more Pola licks the area, the worse she will make it. If you are very good about watching her, she can have the collar off but it should be put back in as soon as you will not be watching her anymore. Every pet is different in their stress levels (just like humans), most pets will accept the collar with time. The collars can also come in a hard and soft variety. The soft ones are generally tolerated better but some dogs can figure out how to get around them! Watch Pola very closely for anxiety and try the soft collar if you see it. However, it may take a few days to get adjusted to wearing the collar I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
