My cat is breathing fast and stressed. How can I calm her at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5 lbs

My cat was diagnosed with leukemia a month back but seemed to have made great progress, returning nearly to her normal state. Last week she suffered a blood clot in her one of her legs. Last night she had to be cleaned (which she hates) to wash out the diarrhea in her fur, but she’s been breathing rapidly since. Currently, we can’t afford costly treatments, so what can be done at home to at least calm her down. I’m worried about my baby. :(

Poor Meeko! You can get Feliway, which is a pheromone diffuser that releases calming pheromones. You can pair that with a Sentry calming collar. If these things don't work for her, I would speak to a vet about medications that may help. Best of luck.

Going to the vet can be very stressful for a cat! You can try using a Sentry calming collar on Marley. This collar releases pheromones when in contact with her skin that helps with anxiety. You can discuss with your vet if they can prescribe any medications to give her before taking her into the vet so that she is calmer during the visit. You can also see about using a mobile vet service. They will come to your home and do her health visit, vaccines, etc there, which may be must less stressful for both her and you :-)
