My dog is sick, on antibiotics, but won't eat or poop. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 9 years and 9 months old | 26 lbs

My dog hasn’t been sick and vomiting and having diarrhea for 3 days I took him to the vet yesterday and they put him on antibiotics but he hasn’t eaten or pooped since. What should I do? He is super sluggish and I’m worried.

I'm sorry, I forgot to add that can be normal to see a period of no pooping after a dog has diarrhea, especially if the dog hasn't eaten. That is why my answer was more focused on getting Boomer to eat. I hope this helps!

I'd try to tempt Boomer to eat by offering him some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice soaked in gently warmed low sodium chicken broth. If he refuses to eat that, then I would take him back into the vet. Best of luck.
