My dog is skinny and losing hair after amputation. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 63 lbs

Ruffles had to have an amputation and is 2 weeks post op. She'll eat anything that's not dog food and drinks great. She also has a bed sore she got while still in the hospital. We have ointment for that and the amputation site. She's skinny and every time I run her down with a damp rag (she can't stand, the hind leg she has left is useless because she can't feel anything) some of her hair falls out. Not a lot, but it's not just shedding, but little clumps. What can I do for that and weight gain?

Poor Ruffles! Try mixing in boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice with her dog food, and adding gently warmed low sodium chicken broth over it all. If she eats that, over time gradually reduce the amount of chicken, rice, and broth, and increase the amount of dog food until she is eat that only As for the hair loss, mention that to her vet, they may want to see her for it. Bet of luck.
