Why is my cat sneezing, losing weight, and has chronic eye issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 9 lbs

My cat has lost a lot of weight and sneezes regularly. His sneezing has been going on for months and it doesn’t get better. He used to cough a lot but that has stopped now. His weight seems to be 9pounds but he looks thinner than before. He has also lost hair. He eats and drinks well and urinates as well. His voice becomes a bit cracky sometimes, it basically gets more pitchy. He also has conjunctivitis that doesn’t disappear. What is wrong with my cat ?

Hello. Dexter probably is infected with a common feline herpes virus. Cats are infected as kittens & remain infected all their lives. It usually only causes mild, but reoccurring problems, usually at high stress times. However, it does not usually cause weight loss, unless things are severe, & your pictures only shows a very mildly affected cat. So, the next step is to see your vet & make sure he is Feline Leukemia & Feline Immundeficiency virus negative. This is done with just 3 drops of blood in your vet's office & takes 10 minutes. If his tests are negative, your vet may elect to put Dexter on a course of anti-viral medications. Hope he is feeling better soon & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
