My diabetic dog is peeing while asleep. How can I prevent this issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 10 years and 10 months old | 19 lbs

My male Schnauzer is a Type 1 diabetic. Of late, he is unrinating a small amount while asleep. Are there any preventive measures to stop this or do we live with it until total incontinance?

Incontinence is not expected to be a part of Diabetes but it is something dogs can develop. Diabetes does make them more prone to urinary tract infections and this can cause this issue. I recommend to have Hanz checked for a an infection and bladder stones. Additionally, some males will respond to medications to tighten the bladder sphincter. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
